Abstract: Study of radiative melting of semitransparent material can be applied to melting or removing ice from paved surface. Here, it is examined theoretically and experimentally. In experiments, cement or copper was used as substrate with dimple, whose reverse side can be cooled or insulated. Clear or cloudy ice was allowed to form in dimple and was then heated from above. Effects of thermal properties of substrate, blackbody temperature of heat source, thermal condition of reverse of substrate, and air bubbles in ice on two-dimensional melting process were examined.
