Abstract: Presents numerical model, based on local-volume-averaging formulation of transport phenomena in porous media. Time variation in profiles of temperature, liquid/ice content, infiltration/percolation rates and rate of phase change are predicted for specified infiltration boundary conditions and initial temperature and moisture contents. Idealized boundary conditions are imposed to investigate sensitivities of uncertainties in soil permeability and freezing point depression to overall prediction of infiltration. Effects of infiltration rate, moisture content and surface temperature on cumulative infiltration and soil temperature and moisture profiles are demonstrated. Model estimates of infiltration compared to quantities calculated from field measurements of soil moisture changes during snow ablation show reasonable agreement.
