Abstract: Continuous high-resolution records of sea-surface temperature and salinity changes during last 18 ka have been derived from two deep-sea sediment cores. Variations of sea-surface salinity and temperature were positively correlated during deglaciation despite strong injection of glacial meltwater during warm episodes. Cold low-salinity events occurred during Younger Dryas and during early stages of deglaciation, 13 to 14 ka BP. Both cold events coincided with minor injections of meltwater in high latitudes, which were insufficient by themselves to cause observed salinity changes. Data imply that joint effect of hydrological cycle and thermohaline circulation acted as feedback, amplifying moderate changes in surface salinity due to meltwater injection in northern North Atlantic. These feedbacks did not occur at low latitudes.
