Abstract: Stable isotope records from seven marine cores and one ice core in conjunction with simpled coupled climate model, provide information on behaviour of climatic system over time scales of 10⁴ to 10⁵ years. Dominant features are presence of orbital frequencies and low number of internal degrees of freedom. Climatic system appears to act on Quaternary time scales under consideration as forced indicator oscillator. Internal mechanisms giving rise to aperiodic oscillations include ice--albedo feedback, precipitation--temperature feedback, and interactions between ice sheets and bedrock.
