Record #126167:

Multiple equilibria in β-plane thermohaline convection / Paola Cessi, William R. Young.

Title: Multiple equilibria in β-plane thermohaline convection / Paola Cessi, William R. Young.
Author(s): Cessi, Paola.
Young, William R.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Ice in the climate system. (1993.),
Abstract: Buoyancy-driven circulation on β-plane with density determined by heat and salt concentration is studied. Flow is forced by prescribed temperature and salinity surface fluxes and there is no wind forcing. Examines zonally averaged model using Wiright and Stocker's (1992) parameterization for pressure difference between east and west coast, In limit of weak surface forcing, equation of motion can be further simplified by exploiting extreme aspect ratio of domain. Coupled set of amplitude equations governs evolution of vertically averaged temperature, and they exhibit linearly stable, multiple equilibria.
