Abstract: Discusses oceanographic impact of melting of continental ice directly into ocean. Effect differs from that of either meltwater discharged into ocean via river system or melting of sea ice because interface between ice and water lies well below sea surface, so that melting provides source of buoyancy, which can drive vertical convection. Focuses on influence that discharges of continental Antarctic ice (with examples from Ronne Ice Shelf and from iceberg in Weddell Sea) have on surface waters and, during last ice age, similar effects due to discharges of ice from Laurentide ice sheet and ice sheet occupying Barents Sea Shelf.
