Heinrich events: triggers of ocean circulation change? / Wallace S. Broecker, Gerard C. Bond, Jerry McManus.

Title: Heinrich events: triggers of ocean circulation change? / Wallace S. Broecker, Gerard C. Bond, Jerry McManus.
Author(s): Broecker, Wallace S.
Bond, Gerard C.
McManus, Jerry.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Berlin: Springer
In: Ice in the climate system. (1993.),
Abstract: Geological evidence (six layers rich in ice-rafted debris in sediments of last glacial age in North Atlantic) indicates melting of icebergs, probably launched in Hudson Strait. Low ¹⁸O to ¹⁶O ratios in foraminifera found in these layers suggest that swarms of icebergs produced pulses of meltwater, which raises question as to whether these events impacted thermohaline circulation on Atlantic. It is proposed that oldest Heinrich event (H-6) drove Atlantic from interglacial to glacial mode and that youngest (H-1) drove it back from glacial to interglacial. Further, it is proposed that event H-2 terminated series of Dansgaard--Oeschger events which punctuated ice-core record during much of last glacial record.
