Abstract: Journal covers time on ship, drifting on floe and in ship's boats as explorers worked their way south, still finding time and energy to correct longitudes of coastal marks. Drift was 1200 miles, morale good despite many trials, foul weather and one chronically suicidal companion. Foxes and several birds were seen among pack ice, trees near mission settlements.
