Abstract: | Paper presents first long-term (1960-89) data set on both muskox density and weather parameters in north and north-east Greenland. Population around 1960 probably represents long term minimum, followed by 25-year favourable period. Variation can be divided into three geographical areas where factors affecting population are apparently different. Regional stability does not increase towards north. Two abiotic factors seem to dominate: amount of winter precipitation, and ablation of upper snow layer, with ice crust formation, in southern range. These factors seem to be statistically independent. |
