Record #125937:

Böcker och språk i sameundervisningen före 1850 / Tuuli Forsgren.

Title: Böcker och språk i sameundervisningen före 1850 / Tuuli Forsgren.
Translated title: Books and language in Saami education before 1850.
Author(s): Forsgren, Tuuli.
Date: 1993.
Language: Swedish.
In: Umeå University. Center for Arctic Cultural Research. Rapport. (1993.), Vol. 23 (1993)
Abstract: Article surveys status of Saami language over 200 years, especially in written form, and attempts from Saami side to remedy matters. Books were of low quality, fragile paper and always in short supply. Fact that Saami dialects were not mutually intelligible was major snag, and those who spoke Finnish preferred to use that rather than learn another dialect. Lars Laestadius's brother Petrus made serious criticisms in 1830's.
