Title: Saami and Dene concepts of nature / Timm Rochon.
Author(s): Rochon, Timm.
Date: 1993.
In: Umeå University. Center for Arctic Cultural Research. Rapport. (1993.), Vol. 27 (1993)
Abstract: Aim of research was to explore Saami and Dene beliefs and approaches to nature in order to offer new insight into western notions of sustainability. Research was conducted over two months among 38 people in Sweden and over one month among 40 people in Northwest Territories, Canada. Includes accounts of hunting or arrival rituals, treatment of killed quarry and "superstitious" practices of daily life. Encroachments - forestry, education, western Christian worldview, hydroelectric power, welfare state provisions - are described. Author stresses that his informants were "typical" but few.
