Abstract: Evidence obtained from five cores collected on Ocean Drilling Program Leg 130 provides record of ice-mass fluctuations over last 2 Ma, basing interpretation of record on Milankovitch's theory, in which it is proposed that periodic changes in tilt of Earth's axis and in eccentricity of Earth's orbit translate into growth and decay of ice mass through changes in summer insolation at high northern latitudes. Three subdivisions of climatic state are distinguishable in ODP Leg 130 core: oldest dominated by axial-tilt cycles, youngest by eccentricity-related cycles, and central third by transition from one to other, which is termed Mid-Pleistocene Revolution. Simulation of ice record from orbital data throws light on nature of this climate shift.
