Abstract: Presents application of Green theorem to solve heat-flow equation for active layer zone with frost table as lower boundary. Model incorporates effect of content of ground ice in retardation of descent of thawing front, and moisture status in calculation of thermal conductivity. Frost table computed for transect comprising two distinct soil segments compared favourably with measured values. Model was used to assess responses of frost table to varying degrees of soil saturation, ice content and air temperatures, and result demonstrates need to consider hydrological variables in these calculations.
