Abstract: Aim was to apply Biot's (1956) approach to ground freezing where three constituents coexist: solid particles, ice particles, and unfrozen liquid water. Expected results would give possibility of predicting acoustic wave velocities for consolidated and unconsolidated media and attenuation of waves starting from mechanical properties of constituents. Final objective is possibility of extracting soil-state parameters such as unfrozen water content from interpretation of experimental results. Experiments were performed with longitudinal and transverse waves in through transmission tests on consolidated and unconsolidated media; results are discussed and compared with theory.
