The West Greenland "Greens" - favourite caribou grazing areas and late Holocene climate changes / Bent Fredskild, Sune Holt.

Title: The West Greenland "Greens" - favourite caribou grazing areas and late Holocene climate changes / Bent Fredskild, Sune Holt.
Author(s): Fredskild, Bent.
Holt, Sune.
Date: 1993.
In: Geografisk Tidsskrift. (1993.), Vol. 93 (1993)
Abstract: Small "greens" of non-flowering Poa pratensis covering about 2% of area are used by caribou during summer, peaking at post-calving period. Pollen and chemical analyses in soil profiles confirm their grazing origin. Original vegetation was Salix glauca scrubs or grassy Betula nana heaths. Climatic change to more humid vegetation is seen in all profiles, ¹⁴C dated at 1700 B.P. in one profile. Due to recent decline in caribou numbers, greens are changing, with Poa pratensis flowering vigorously and Euphrasia frigida spreading.
