Date: | [1993] |
Publisher: | Edmonton, Alberta: University of Alberta, Department of Civil Engineering |
In: | IAHR 92; 11th International Symposium on Ice, Banff, Alberta, Canada, June 15-19, 1992. Proceedings. ([1993]), Vol.3. |
Abstract: | Describes study to examine collective data measured to date on pack-ice forces exerted on large ice features embedded within. Ice loads on structures are influenced by pack-ice driving forces; forecast models of ice movement require realistic input of internal pack-ice strength; and techniques for predicting areas of pressured pack ice are important to Arctic shipping operations. Data are reviewed in context of how pack-ice forces might be averaged spatially to give effective size effect across various widths of influence. Effects of ice thickness and boundary conditions are also discussed. Importance of pack-ice forces in context of ice loads is evaluated with reference to insights obtained from measured data. |
