Abstract: Presents preliminary results of measurements of fracture toughness of basal and prismatic planes in fresh-water ice crystals. Also attempts to measure fracture toughness of grain boundary in bi-crystal, with c-axes of individual grains oriented normal to each other. Although specific toughness values are given, main aim is to discuss problems associated with measurements. Theoretical results of previously derived interface crack deflection criterion are demonstrated by growing controlled cracks normal to grain boundary of fresh-water ice bi-crystal. Furthermore, analysis is used successfully to predict stability of crack trajectory for growth along basal and prismatic planes.
