Stress distributions as a reflection of failure processes during medium scale ice indentation / Robert M.W. Frederking, Mohamed Sayed.

Title: Stress distributions as a reflection of failure processes during medium scale ice indentation / Robert M.W. Frederking, Mohamed Sayed.
Author(s): Frederking, Robert M. W.
Sayed, Mohamed.
Date: [1993]
Publisher: Edmonton, Alberta: University of Alberta, Department of Civil Engineering
In: IAHR 92; 11th International Symposium on Ice, Banff, Alberta, Canada, June 15-19, 1992. Proceedings. ([1993]), Vol.3.
Abstract: Stresses were measured on contact face of flat indenter during tests at Hobson's Choice Ice Island, 1989. Geometry of indenter and ice surface produced plane-strain condition in ice. From local stresses, spatial distribution or gradients were determined. Tests showed typical cycling of force--time records. Parts of cycle were related to stages of indentation processes such as crushing, extrusion of crushed ice, and contact of indenter with intact ice. Here, stress gradients and shapes of spatial stress distribution are related to assumed material behaviour and used to identify stages of ice indentation process Discussion, p.1515.
