Abstract: Presents brief historical overview of development of ice laboratories at University of Iowa's Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research, indicating evolution of research directions and describing design features and considerations adopted in construction of laboratories and special experimental facilities. Present facilities include ice-towing tank, refrigerated flume, strength-testing rigs (including MTS rig), icing wind tunnel, small ice tank, instrumented snow plough fitted to truck, and floor-mounted high-speed ice-scraping rig.
