Abstract: Here, combined surface-/volume-scattering model is fitted to individual altimeter return wave forms, rather than averaged altimeter wave forms as in K.C. Partington and co-workers (ibid., 1989, 35(120) :267-275). Quantitative estimates of geographic and seasonal variations in near-surface properties of ice sheet are obtained by this method. Specifically, extinction coefficient of snow is found to vary with elevation and latitude over Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Other model parameters (surface roughness, volume coefficient, wave-form amplitude) are also investigated. Important applications for investigating temporal changes in surface conditions of ice sheets.
