Abstract: Images depicting folding of internal layers can aid in interpretation of ice-stream dynamics. These structures are not related to bedrock topography and show tilting of axial fold planes in flow direction. Data show that they originate upstream of region of streaming flow and are advected into ice streams. Mechanism for producing folds is hypothesized to be changes in basal boundary conditions as ice makes transition from inland ice to ice-stream flow. Migration of this transition zone headward can then cause folds in internal layering to be propagated down ice stream.
