Abstract: Presents preliminary numerical study of predicted effects of surface warming on ground temperatures beneath both virgin permafrost and highway embankments at two sites, which lie on continuous permafrost, 4700 m a.s.l., with mean annual air temperature of --5.6°C. Prediction shows increased depth of thaw accompanied by greater thaw settlement of embankment constructed on ice-rich foundation.
