Record #125436:

Transformation process observations of polar firn to ice / Chester C. Langway, Jr, Hitoshi Shoji, Atau Mitani, Henrik B. Clausen.

Title: Transformation process observations of polar firn to ice / Chester C. Langway, Jr, Hitoshi Shoji, Atau Mitani, Henrik B. Clausen.
Author(s): Langway, Chester C.,
Shoji, Hitoshi.
Mitani, Atau.
Clausen, Henrik B.
Date: 1993.
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1993.), Vol. 18 (1993)
Abstract: Transformation is very slow unless meltwater is present. Qualitative measure of variation of permeability with depth was determined for shallow ice cores from dry-zone regions in Greenland and Antarctica. Results provide insights into snow densification and pore close-off. Measurements show that bulk densities may be expressed as function of overburden; pore close-off takes place when overburden is 3.0 to 4.5 bar.
