Abstract: To aid in analysis of controlling failure processes around crack tip in ice, replicas of fracture surfaces were viewed in scanning electron microscope. Fracture surfaces were obtained by heating beam specimens of granular polycrystalline and S2 columnar ice in four-point bending. Loading was monotonically increased until failure for specimens with either no previous loading or cyclic (fatigue) loading history. Micrographs exhibit signs of elastic and plastic behaviour. Evidence of slip, cross-slip and fatigue crack striations near crack tip are presented and discussed.
