Abstract: Dislocations and grain boundaries in specimens 2 mm thick of columnar-grained polycrystalline ice were examined. Clear images of dislocation structures in several grains were recorded simultaneously. Numerous stacking faults were observed after rapid cooling, but stacking-fault-free zone was found near grain boundaries. Size of this depleted zone in any particular grain is function of angle between basal plane and grain boundary. Prismatic punching of dislocations around inclusions was also observed. In situ straining experiments clearly revealed grain-boundary generation of dislocations. Dislocations once generated as semi-hexagonal loops slipped on basal plane.
