Record #125391:

The compressive strength of frazil sea ice / Jacqueline A. Richter-Menge.

Title: The compressive strength of frazil sea ice / Jacqueline A. Richter-Menge.
Author(s): Richter-Menge, Jacqueline A.
Date: [1993]
Publisher: Edmonton, Alberta: University of Alberta, Department of Civil Engineering
In: IAHR 92; 11th International Symposium on Ice, Banff, Alberta, Canada, June 15-19, 1992. Proceedings. ([1993]), Vol.2.
Abstract: Unconfined uniaxial compressive strength tests were performed on frazil-ice samples from Weddell Sea, at constant strain rates ranging from 10⁻² to 10⁻⁵ s⁻¹ and temperatures of --5 and --10°C, these conditions covering brittle--ductile transition of this ice type. Results are presented and compressive strength of frazil is compared to that of transversely isotropic columnar saline ice loaded perpendicular to growth direction. Analysis indicates that strength of frazil and columnar ice is comparable at given porosity. Discusses this finding with respect to variations in structural characteristics of each ice type; in particular, influence of grain size and spacing of brine inclusions is considered. Discussion, Vol.3, p.1065.
