Abstract: Describes design and operation of apparatus used to simulate impact of iceberg on offshore structure. Tests investigated local pressure versus area effects under highly controlled conditions. Results showed that contact area affects ice pressure, with pressure decreasing as area increases. In larger tests, dynamic effects were observed which caused sawtooth waveform to be superimposed on force versus time plot. Waveform was not caused by servo control system which regulated velocity during tests, but resulted from failure mechanisms within ice.
