Heat transfer through ice--water interface with roughness / Vincent Chu, Yaohua Wang, Semaan Sarraf.

Title: Heat transfer through ice--water interface with roughness / Vincent Chu, Yaohua Wang, Semaan Sarraf.
Author(s): Chu, Vincent.
Wang, Yaohua.
Sarraf, Semaan.
Date: [1993]
Publisher: Edmonton, Alberta: University of Alberta, Department of Civil Engineering
In: IAHR 92; 11th International Symposium on Ice, Banff, Alberta, Canada, June 15-19, 1992. Proceedings. ([1993]), Vol.2.
Abstract: Laboratory study of role of roughness on transfer of heat from flowing water to river-ice covers. Brash-ice covers observed during breakup of ice jams were simulated by array of closely packed ice cylinders to cover surface of open channel flow. Heat flux from flow to ice cylinders was determined by measuring melting rate. Results were correlated with dimensionless groups directly related to length scale of roughness at ice--water interface. Small-scale features on rough interface were found to be important in transfer of heat across interface.
