Temperature and salinity beneath Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica / Keith W. Nicholls, Adrian Jenkins.

Title: Temperature and salinity beneath Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica / Keith W. Nicholls, Adrian Jenkins.
Author(s): Nicholls, Keith W.
Jenkins, Adrian.
Date: 1993.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1993.), Vol. 98(C12) (1993)
Abstract: Programme to collect measureents via hot-water drilled holes began in 1990-91 austral summer, using specially designed combined CTD probe and water sampler. Ice column is composed of 516 m ice of meteoric origin underlain by 31 of unconsolidated slush. Water column beneath consisted of 210 m layer of ice-shelf water (ISW) (temperature --2.30°C, salinity 34.53) overlying 100 m layer of modified western shelf water (--2.03°, 34.64) with layers separated by 50 m pycnocline. Comparison of data with published oceanographic observations indicate origin of water is either western Berkner shelf or north of ice front in Ronne depression. Measurements from drill site broadly match predictions from simple plume model of circulation evolving along Rutford flowline. In that model, basal slope of ice shelf is central in determining properties of ISW plume. Excepting upper few tens of metres, temperature and salinity of entire water column vary by 0.04°C and 0.03 on tidal time scales; there may be longer-term drift and variability from internal wave activity.
