Sweden - opening of the Swedish Saami Parliament / Claus Oreskov, Mette Duekilde, Peter Bille Larsen.

Title: Sweden - opening of the Swedish Saami Parliament / Claus Oreskov, Mette Duekilde, Peter Bille Larsen.
Author(s): Oreskov, Claus.
Duekilde, Mette.
Larsen, Peter Bille.
Date: 1993.
In: IWGIA Newsletter. (1993.), Vol. 4 (1993)
Abstract: Sweden has 17,000 Saami, of whom 5,400 registered and 3,900 voted for 13 parties. Most parties wanted more powers for parliament, especially for Saami to be constitutionally recognised as aboriginal people so that ILO Convention 169 could apply. Complaints about Swedish hunting law were reinforced by hunger strikers and vote of no confidence in P. Unckel, Minister for Saami Affairs. President of parliament sees tasks ahead include: language question, strengthening of hunting rights, situation of forest Saami, relationship with EC and co-operation on Arctic environment in Barents region.
