Abstract: Points out deficiency of critical velocity concept for determining frazil-jam profiles. Here, concept of ice-transport capacity is developed, based on field data from Hequ reach of Yellow River. Can be described by existing bed-load transport formulae for low-density sediments. Laboratory studies were carried out using low-density chips to determine transport rates under open water and ice cover for range of flow conditions. Cover load transport formula is obtained based on field and laboratory data.
