Abstract: Backwater profiles occur where river reaches show decelerating flow. Laboratory experiments suggest that backwater profile may disply one of two possible configurations, depending on degree of backwater, i.e. increase in downstream depth above normal depth relative to changes in elevation of bottom from one end of reach to other end. Neither configuration resembles published predictions and neither can be approximated through use of conventional step method of computation. Introduction of floating cover on either configuration had no effect on stage and is same response as experienced in field studies. Discussion, Vol.3, p.361.
