Abstract: When evaluating ice forces acting on offshore structures, perfect (idealized) contact between leading edge of ice and structure is assumed. However, leading edge of ice cover is highly irregular. Small-scale field tests were made to examine effects of this irregular contact between floating sheets of fresh-water lake ice and rectangular pile indenters. Estimates that force of ice in idealized contact is 1.25 times larger than that in irregular contact.
