Abstract: Stable macrocracks are defined as large cracks that are arrested before they propagate to free surface. Proposes that crushing with extrusion failure will occur when initiation toughness is less than undamaged arrest toughness of ice. This criterion should provide knowledge of when different failure modes will occur.
