Record #125038:

Ice sheets / Robert H. Thomas.

Title: Ice sheets / Robert H. Thomas.
Author(s): Thomas, Robert H.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Cambridge: Cambridge University Press
In: Atlas of satellite observations related to global change. (1993.),
Abstract: Discusses availability of data from satellites and aircraft. Required sensors (and, in parentheses, their purposes) include: radar altimeter (surface elevation over smoother near-horizontal portions of ice sheets); laser altimeter (elevation changes over rest of ice sheet and elevation profiles across big ice sheets with better precision than that achieved by radar altimeters), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Landsat (areal extent of ice sheets and ice velocity of large ice streams and glaciers); SAR, scatterometer, and passive microwave (mapping regions of summer melting); thermal infrared (ice-surface temperatures); and laser ranger (ice velocities and strain rates, and, with laser altimeter, snow-accumulation rates). These sensors are reviewed under broad classification of imaging sensors and instruments for measuring ranges. Data availability: see appendices 1 and 2 in Thomas, Polar research from satellites. Washington, DC, Joint Oceanographic Institutions, 1991.
