Abstract: Author sets up hypothesis, that whaling was under-cover ploy of Norwegian government to establish rule over Svalbard, and demolishes it. Somehow, national consciousness around 1905, with increasing and varied interests on archipelago, changed official line in 1918, in time for strong line to be taken in 1920 Svalbard Treaty.
