Abstract: Author believes that harpooning of whales was introduced by Basques in 17th Cent., and that laws on ownership of carcasses inshore were devised for whales that had been driven ashore or speared at sea. He quotes several accounts of whaling and does not detect any mention of harpoons or lines. He considers problem of making suitable line from hide or bast. New harpoon types were introduced from New England in 19th Cent.
