Record #124062:
Variations in the thermal output of the subglacial Grímsvötn caldera, Iceland / Helgi Björnsson, Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson.
Title: | Variations in the thermal output of the subglacial Grímsvötn caldera, Iceland / Helgi Björnsson, Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson. |
Author(s): | Björnsson, Helgi. Gudmundsson, Magnús Tumi. |
Date: | 1993. |
In: | Geophysical Research Letters. (1993.), Vol. 20(19) (1993) |
Abstract: | Record of heat release from subglacial geothermal system of Grímsvötn caldera within Vatnajökull ice cap covers 1922-1991, using in situ measurements of volume of meltwater in caldera lake and subtracting melting due to climate. Fluctuations in heat flux are closely related to volcanic activity. Main pulse was caused in 1938 by major eruption. Article calculates heat flux in various modes, with implications for magma solidification and cooling. |
