Record #123926:

A method for determining the anisotropic fracture toughness of ice / Lars M. Stehn, Samuel J. DeFranco, John P. Dempsey.

Title: A method for determining the anisotropic fracture toughness of ice / Lars M. Stehn, Samuel J. DeFranco, John P. Dempsey.
Author(s): Stehn, Lars M.
DeFranco, Samuel J.
Dempsey, John P.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Hamburg: Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA), Department for Ice and Environmental Technology
In: POAC 93 : the 12th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, 17.--20. August 1993, Hamburg. (1993.), Vol.1.
Abstract: Influence of structural anisotropy on fracture toughness of S1 fresh-water ice was investigated by fabricating and testing three fracture geometries from single ice core at --16°C. Specimens can be prepared with very little machining, so method is suitable for field studies. Wide scatter in results, but apparent fracture toughness was found to be higher for cracks perpendicular than for cracks parallel to c-axis and columnar grains.
