Calibration of a portable ice strength testing apparatus: approach and some preliminary results / K.C. Gulati, R.C. Johnson, A. Sangolt.

Title: Calibration of a portable ice strength testing apparatus: approach and some preliminary results / K.C. Gulati, R.C. Johnson, A. Sangolt.
Author(s): Gulati, K. C.
Johnson, R. C.
Sangolt, A.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Hamburg: Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA), Department for Ice and Environmental Technology
In: POAC 93 : the 12th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, 17.--20. August 1993, Hamburg. (1993.), Vol.1.
Abstract: Describes portable equipment for ice strength testing (PEIST): borehole jack-type apparatus designed for in-situ testing to assess ice strength for use in design. Instrument will provide peak indenter displacement rate of 8 mm s⁻¹ at indentation pressure of 40 MPa, or minimum peak force of 180 KN. Object of calibration is to correlate indentation failure pressures with laboratory-determined uniaxial unconfined compressive strength of ice.
