Abstract: | Summarizes tenth successive United Nations discussion on "Question of Antarctica". Despite passing of resolution critical of Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), notes growing appreciation among UN members of Environmental Protocol's designation of continent as "a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science" in which mining is prohibited. Antarctic Treaty parties (ATPs) similarly expressed satisfaction with concerted approach to Antarctica embodied in Agenda 21 of UNCED and agreed to make research products were freely available to international community. |
