Abstract: Describes drill KEMS-112, developed at St Petersburg Mining Institute, which is designed for core drilling in glaciers and subglacial rock to depth of 4000 m at temperatures down to --60°C. Discusses tests at site on Vavilov glacier, Oktyabr'skoy Revolyutsii, Severnaya Zemlya, in 1984, 1986, and 1988, and subsequent successful use of drill at Vostok, Antarctica, in 1989.
