| Abstract: | Object was to measure depths, widths, spacings, and spatial densities of glacier-surface deformation features (e.g. crevasses), and from these measurements gain insights into glacier-flow dynamics and mechanics of deformation. For this, two geodetic ALA systems coupled to Global Positioning System receivers were used; these acquired sub-metre resolution topographic profiles of lower parts of two ice caps in Iceland in May 1989 and September 1991, and of ice stream in Greenland in April 1992. Results for crevasse morphology, spatial density and spacing are given, also metre-scale local slopes, long-wavelength gradients and derived strain rates. |
