Abstract: | Horned caps, once typical of Saami women, are no longer worn, but 1985 type have very high, soft tops and many decorative ribbons sewn in band. Brides' crowns are lavishly decorated, with dangling ribbons. Author thinks little of theories of their origin, and bases discussion on two facts: existence of horned caps and Saami women's sewing skills. These combine with desire to outshine rivals, but not by too much, so creating continuum of change within cultural stability. |
