Record #123325:
A recent sea-ice retreat west of the Antarctic Peninsula / S.S. Jacobs, Josefino C. Comiso.
Title: | A recent sea-ice retreat west of the Antarctic Peninsula / S.S. Jacobs, Josefino C. Comiso. |
Author(s): | Jacobs, S. S. Comiso, Josefino C. |
Date: | 1993. |
In: | Geophysical Research Letters. (1993.), Vol. 20(12) (1993) |
Abstract: | Satellite passive microwave data show record decrease in sea-ice extent in Bellingshausen Sea from mid-1988 to early 1991. Change coincides with more southerly surface winds, increasing cyclonic activity and rising surface air temperatures. Preceded by high ice cover in 1986-87, retreat was most evident during summer in formerly perennial sea-ice field over continental shelf. Ocean heat storage probably contributed to persistence and coastal propagation of this anomaly. |
