Peura- ja poroistutusten ekologiaa / Ilpo Kojola.
Title: | Peura- ja poroistutusten ekologiaa / Ilpo Kojola. |
Translated title: | Ecology of reindeer introductions. |
Author(s): | Kojola, Ilpo. |
Date: | 1993. |
Language: | Finnish. |
In: | Suomen Riista. (1993.), Vol. 39 (1993) |
Abstract: | Success of attempts to introduce reindeer on Arctic and sub-Arctic islands shows extinction less likely on large islands that have diverse habitats. If population reaches phase of irruptive oscillations after exponential growth it usually becomes established. Similar results occur in predator-free continental areas. Article continues with details of re- introduction of wild forest reindeer to central Finland from 1979 and data on their increase. Concludes with proportions of food obtained from ground, shrubs and trees, and predicts danger of hard winter to normally sustainable numbers. |
