Abstract: Analysis of samples of sea water, basal ice and green ice from ice cliffs and green icebergs, all from vicinity of Amery Ice Shelf and Prydz Bay, was carried out in order to evaluate divergent viewpoints concerning colour and source of ice. Fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that blue absorption, and, hence, inherent green colour, is due to presence of marine-derived organic matter. Thick accumulations of green ice in icebergs and at base of ice shelves suggest that high concentrations of organic matter exist in sea water for centuries at depth of basal freezing. For correction, see ibid, 1993, 98(C10) :18,309.
