Characteristics and possible source of a 1479 A.D. volcanic ash layer in a Greenland ice core / R. Joseph Fiacco, Jr, Julie M. Palais, Mark S. Germani, Gregory A. Zielicski, Paul A. Mayewski.

Title: Characteristics and possible source of a 1479 A.D. volcanic ash layer in a Greenland ice core / R. Joseph Fiacco, Jr, Julie M. Palais, Mark S. Germani, Gregory A. Zielicski, Paul A. Mayewski.
Author(s): Fiacco, R. Joseph,
Palais, Julie M.
Germani, Mark S.

Mayewski, Paul A.
Date: 1993.
In: Quaternary Research. (1993.), Vol. 39(3) (1993)
Abstract: Volcanic glass shards of rhyolite, corresponding in age to 1479-1480 eruption of Mount St Helens, WA, were identified. Discusses atmospheric significance: difference in depositional timing suggests tropospheric transport of ash and stratospheric transport of sulphate aerosol. Large-scale climatic perturbations following eruption were evidently negligible. Glaciochemical indicators suggest eruption took place in late autumn to early winter.
