Lemming grazing on snowbed vegetation during a population peak, northern Norway / Jon Moen, Peter A. Lundberg, Lauri Oksanen.

Abstract: | Impact of a lemming population on snowbed in Joatka area, northern Norway, was studied during 1988 (population peak), 1989 and 1990. Cover of graminoids, woody plants, lichens, litter, lemming faeces and mosses was measured. Changes in cover were analysed with repeated ANOVA's. Captures of voles and lemmings in traps showed that vole damage was relatively negligible. Lemmings significantly decreased cover of graminoids by 33% and mosses by 66% during peak winter. Anomalous growth of certain plant categories during study period was probably because wire exclosures prevented trampling by migrating reindeer. |
