| Abstract: | Following Shackleton's epic drift in Endurance in 1915, first intentional scientific drift station in Southern Ocean was established in 1992 in western Weddell Sea by joint effort of USA and Russia. Ice Station Weddell-1 (ISW-1) followed track of Endurance closely, gathering atmospheric, sea-ice (salinity, dynamics, thermodynamics, structure, formation), oceanographic and biological (sea-ice microbial communities, algal production) data. Results are summarized. |
